This 5-week course is taught by experts in the Writing Studio and aims to train students in multiple facets of scientific writing. Currently, IIT Gandhinagar students are eligible to take this course for credit.

About the course:

This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of scientific writing. The participants of this course will learn to construct a scientific document, which is an essential skill to succeed in academics. They will learn the unwritten rules of scientific writing which will eventually help their chances of publishing in good quality journals. Topics that will be covered include Academic Writing, Grammar, Developing a Paragraph, Sections of Research Paper, and Academic Integrity, Plagiarism, and Scientific Poster Making. The course comprises of Power Point presentations on chosen topics, along with carefully designed assignments and exercises to test the level of understanding. The students can interact with the instructors using Google Classroom and schedule one-on-one online sessions through Zoom.   

Objectives:  

• To enhance Scientific Writing Skills; to be specific enhancing knowledge regarding stages of writing, different styles of writing, citation, argumentation, descriptive writing, and finding data from reliable sources.
• To make students aware of the proper structure/format of Academic Writing
• To review the principles and practice of the various modes and forms of scientific communication including scientific papers, technical reports, proposal writing, posters, and dissertations.
• Identify the different objectives of these communication modes, and understand key steps and ingredients for effective scientific communication.
• Emphasize basic skills for critical evaluation of scientific communications and provide opportunities to practice these principles.
• To develop an understanding of academic integrity and plagiarism in Academic Writing
• To promote student skills to write different types of scientific documents: poster, article, dissertation, review article, and so on.

About the Instructor:

Dr. Monal K. Desai has completed MA, MPhil and PhD in English Language Teaching (ELT). Her research (during MPhil and PhD) focused on Blended Learning (Amalgamation of online and face-to-face learning) to enhance learners’ English language. She has nine years of teaching experience at graduation and post-graduation levels. She has been teaching English with the Writing Studio for the past 2 years.
